Why can't I just add the denominators?
Denominators represent the size of pieces. Adding 1/4 + 1/4 means "one fourth-piece plus one fourth-piece" which equals 2/4. The piece size (denominator) stays the same.
How do I simplify fractions?
Find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator, then divide both by it. For 6/8, the GCD is 2, so 6รท2 / 8รท2 = 3/4.
