💡 1. Remember DMSB (Does McDonalds Serve Burgers?)
Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down. Say the mantra on every single step of the calculation.
💡 2. Align Quotient Digits Above the Right Column
If dividing into the tens digit, place the quotient digit directly above the tens digit of the dividend.
💡 3. Check with Multiplication
Verify your answer: (Quotient × Divisor) + Remainder = Dividend.
The 4-Step DMSB Division Algorithm
Long division uses a repeating 4-step memory cycle:
- D — Divide: How many times does the divisor fit into the current working number?
- M — Multiply: Multiply the quotient digit by the divisor.
- S — Subtract: Subtract that product from the working number to find the remainder.
- B — Bring Down: Bring down the next digit from the dividend to form the new working number.
Repeat DMSB until all digits have been brought down!
