Order of Operations: PEMDAS, BODMAS & The Left-to-Right Rule

๐Ÿ’ก STEP 1: THE INTUITION

Why We Can't Read Math Like a Book (The Airport VIP Rule)

โœˆ๏ธ The Airport Runway Analogy

When you read a sentence in English, you read strictly from left to right. But mathematics is like an airport boarding gate: some passengers have higher priority passes and board the plane first!

If everyone rushed in at once, a simple expression like 4 + 3 ร— 5 would cause chaos. One person would say 35 (adding first), and another would say 19 (multiplying first).

๐Ÿ‘‘
Tier 1: VIP First ClassParentheses ( ) & Brackets [ ] get immediate 100% priority.
โšก
Tier 2: Business ClassExponents (xยฒ) & Roots (โˆšx) board right after brackets.
๐Ÿค
Tier 3: Equal PartnersMultiply (ร—) & Divide (รท) share equal rank (solve Left-to-Right!).
๐Ÿšถ
Tier 4: General BoardingAdd (+) & Subtract (-) board last (solve Left-to-Right!).
๐ŸŒ STEP 2: THE GLOBAL ACRONYMS

PEMDAS vs BODMAS vs GEMDAS: What's the Difference?

Depending on where you go to school in the world, your teacher might use a different mnemonic memory phrase. They all mean the exact same mathematical rules!

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ PEMDAS
โ€ข P: Parentheses
โ€ข E: Exponents
โ€ข M & D: Multiply & Divide (Left to Right)
โ€ข A & S: Add & Subtract (Left to Right)

โ€ข B: Brackets
โ€ข O: Orders (Powers / Roots)
โ€ข D & M: Divide & Multiply (Left to Right)
โ€ข A & S: Add & Subtract (Left to Right)

๐Ÿ’ก Modern GEMDAS
โ€ข G: Grouping Symbols ( ), [ ], , | |
โ€ข E: Exponents & Radicals
โ€ข MD: Multiplication / Division (Equal Rank)
โ€ข AS: Addition / Subtraction (Equal Rank)
Preferred by modern mathematicians!
โš ๏ธ STEP 3: MASTER THE TRAPS

The 4 Traps Where 80% of Students Lose Marks

๐Ÿšจ Trap 1: "Multiplication ALWAYS comes before Division" (WRONG!)

In PEMDAS, M is written before D, but they have 100% equal priority. When both appear, you MUST solve from Left to Right:

โœ“ Correct: 12 รท 3 ร— 2 = (12 รท 3) ร— 2 = 4 ร— 2 = 8
โœ— Common Mistake: 12 รท (3 ร— 2) = 12 รท 6 = 2 (WRONG!)
๐Ÿšจ Trap 2: "Addition ALWAYS comes before Subtraction" (WRONG!)

Just like multiplication and division, Addition and Subtraction are equal partners. Solve from Left to Right:

โœ“ Correct: 20 - 4 + 6 = (20 - 4) + 6 = 16 + 6 = 22
โœ— Common Mistake: 20 - (4 + 6) = 20 - 10 = 10 (WRONG!)
๐Ÿšจ Trap 3: The Invisible Fraction Bar Parentheses

A horizontal fraction bar acts like giant invisible parentheses around the top and bottom:

โœ“ Rule: (8 + 4) / (2 ร— 3) = 12 / 6 = 2 (Solve numerator and denominator completely before dividing!).
๐Ÿšจ Trap 4: Negative Base Squaring (-3ยฒ vs (-3)ยฒ)
โ€ข -3ยฒ means -(3 ร— 3) = -9 (Exponent applies ONLY to 3, then negative is applied).
โ€ข (-3)ยฒ means (-3) ร— (-3) = +9 (Parentheses protect the negative sign).

Step-by-Step Proof

Select a problem preset below and click through each step to watch how mathematical brackets and operators dissolve in proper order:

Current Problem
12 รท 3 ร— 2 + 5
Final Answer = 13
Step-by-Step Breakdown (3 Steps):
1Solve 12 รท 3
Result โž” 4 ร— 2 + 5
Tier 3 (Left-to-Right): Division comes before multiplication here because it appears first on the left.
2Solve 4 ร— 2
Result โž” 8 + 5
Tier 3 (Multiplication): 4 ร— 2 = 8
3Solve 8 + 5
Result โž” 13
Tier 4 (Addition): 8 + 5 = 13
๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Common Trap: If you multiplied 3 ร— 2 first, you would get 12 รท 6 + 5 = 7 (WRONG!).

3 Step-by-Step Worked Examples

Master how to systematically solve every tier of expressions:

Example 1: The Left-to-Right Addition & Subtraction RuleAnswer = 28
Expression: 20 - 4 + 6 ร— 2
1
Multiplication first: 6 ร— 2 = 12 โž” 20 - 4 + 12
2
Left-to-Right Subtraction: 20 - 4 = 16 โž” 16 + 12
3
Final Addition: 16 + 12 = 28.
Example 2: Parentheses with Powers & DivisionAnswer = 27
Expression: 3 ร— (4 + 2)ยฒ รท 4
1
Parentheses first: 4 + 2 = 6 โž” 3 ร— 6ยฒ รท 4
2
Exponent next: 6ยฒ = 36 โž” 3 ร— 36 รท 4
3
Left-to-Right Multiply & Divide: 3 ร— 36 = 108 โž” 108 รท 4 = 27.
Example 3: Multi-Level Nested Brackets [ ]Answer = 25
Expression: 45 - [3 ร— (2ยณ + 1) - 7]
1
Innermost bracket (power first): 2ยณ = 8 โž” (8 + 1) = 9 โž” 45 - [3 ร— 9 - 7]
2
Solve outer bracket [ ]: 3 ร— 9 = 27 โž” 27 - 7 = 20 โž” 45 - [20]
3
Final subtraction: 45 - 20 = 25.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the order of operations in math?

The order of operations is the universal rulebook for solving math expressions: 1) Parentheses / Grouping Symbols, 2) Exponents / Powers, 3) Multiplication and Division (from left to right), and 4) Addition and Subtraction (from left to right).

Q: Does multiplication always come before division in PEMDAS?

No! This is the #1 most common student mistake. Multiplication and Division have EQUAL priority. When both appear in an expression, you must solve them in order from LEFT to RIGHT.

Q: What is the difference between PEMDAS and BODMAS?

PEMDAS and BODMAS represent the exact same mathematical rules. PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction) is used primarily in the US and Canada. BODMAS (Brackets, Orders, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction) is used in the UK, India, Australia, and New Zealand.

Q: Why do we need an order of operations?

Without a standardized order of operations, a simple expression like 4 + 3 ร— 5 could produce two different answers (35 if adding first, or 19 if multiplying first). The order of operations ensures every mathematician, student, and computer calculates the exact same correct answer (19).
