A number bond to 20 shows how numbers up to 20 break down into two smaller parts. As numbers grow past 10, physical finger counting stops working. Number bonds give children a powerful visual mental model to solve math problems quickly.

  • Tens & Ones Decomposition: Break teen numbers into an easy 10 and remaining ones ($14 = 10 + 4$).

1. Spot the Whole (The Boss Circle)
Check the circle connected to both branches. That is the total ceiling amount (e.g., 20 or 15).

2. Look for the 'Group of 10'
For teen numbers, see if one part is 10. If the whole is 17 and one part is 10, the other part is simply the 7 ones!

3. Subtract or Count on to Find Missing Part
If the whole is 20 and one part is 16, count on: 16 + 4 = 20. The missing part is 4!

Watch out for these three hurdles when students work with numbers up to 20:

Trap #1

Treating 14 as 1 and 4 Instead of 10 and 4

The Mistake:

When decomposing 14, the student writes parts of 1 and 4.

Why it happens:

Failing to see the digit 1 as representing a full bundle of ten.

The Proven Fix:

Use base-10 rods or two ten-frames. Show that 14 is one FULL ten-frame (10) plus 4 loose counters (4).

Trap #2

Adding the Whole and the Known Part

The Mistake:

Given whole = 20 and part = 6, the student adds 20 + 6 and writes 26 in the missing circle.

Why it happens:

A part can NEVER be bigger than the whole!

The Proven Fix:

Teach the 'Ceiling Rule': The whole is the ceiling. Parts must live under the ceiling. If your answer is greater than 20, you added instead of subtracted!

Running Out of Fingers Past 10

The Mistake:

Students stall and get anxious trying to count past 10 on their hands.

Why it happens:

Slows down mental calculation and creates math fatigue.

Lock in the 'Bridge to 10': First count to 10, then count the extra ones. No 20 fingers needed!
