Comparing Fractions Practice Problems & Conceptual Mastery

Comparing fractions determines which part of a whole is larger, smaller, or equal. You can compare directly using the same denominators, common numerators, benchmark comparisons (like 1/2), or the cross-multiplication strategy.

📝 Worked Step-by-Step Example

Problem: Compare: 4/9 vs 3/7
Step-by-Step Solution:

1. Multiply left numerator by right denominator: 4 × 7 = 28. 2. Multiply right numerator by left denominator: 3 × 9 = 27. 3. Since 28 > 27, 4/9 > 3/7.

🧠 Core Problem-Solving Strategies

1. Same Denominator Rule

When denominators match, the fraction with the larger numerator is always greater because it has more slices of the same size.

2. Same Numerator Rule

When numerators match, the fraction with the smaller denominator is greater because fewer cuts create larger slices.

3. The Butterfly Method (Cross-Multiplication)

For a/b vs c/d, compare (a × d) with (b × c). The side with the larger product belongs to the larger fraction.

📖 Key Mathematical Terms & Vocabulary

Inequality Symbols

Symbols used to show relative magnitude: > (greater than), < (less than), and = (equal to).

Cross-Multiplication

Multiplying the numerator of each fraction by the denominator of the other to compare magnitudes without finding a common denominator.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Butterfly Method (cross-multiplication) work?

When you cross-multiply a/b and c/d, you are effectively converting both fractions to the common denominator (b × d). The left numerator becomes a × d and the right numerator becomes c × b. Comparing the cross-products is the exact same as comparing the rescaled numerators!

How can I compare fractions using benchmarks like 1/2?

Look at whether each fraction is greater than or less than half. For example, in 3/7 vs 5/8: half of 7 is 3.5, so 3/7 is less than half. Half of 8 is 4, so 5/8 is greater than half. Therefore, 5/8 > 3/7 immediately without math!

Why is 1/3 greater than 1/5 even though 5 is bigger than 3?

The denominator tells you how many slices the whole is split into. Splitting a pizza into 3 pieces gives much bigger slices than splitting it into 5 pieces. When numerators are equal, smaller denominators always yield larger fractions.
