Step-by-Step Method to Calculate the Hypotenuse

Follow these 4 reliable steps on every problem:

  1. Step 1 (Formula): Write the Pythagorean Theorem: c² = a² + b².
  2. Step 2 (Substitute): Replace a and b with the given leg lengths (e.g. if a = 6 and b = 8, then c² = 6² + 8²).
  3. Step 3 (Simplify): Evaluate the exponents and add: c² = 36 + 64 = 100.
  4. Step 4 (Square Root): Take the principal square root: c = √100 = 10.

The #1 Error: √(a² + b²) ≠ a + b

The single most frequent mistake made by students is attempting to cancel the square root with the squares before adding: e.g. incorrectly thinking √(3² + 4²) = 3 + 4 = 7.

Demonstrating with numbers proves why this is mathematically invalid: √(9 + 16) = √25 = 5, which does not equal 7! The addition inside the radical must be completed before extracting the root.
