Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators: The Pizza Slicer & Butterfly Method

๐Ÿ”ฌ Try Visual Slicer ๐Ÿ‘‡
๐Ÿ’ก STEP 1: THE INTUITION

Why You CANNOT Add Fractions Straight Across (The Common Currency Rule)

๐Ÿ’ต The Money & Pizza Slice Metaphor

If you have 1 half-dollar coin (50ยข) and 1 quarter coin (25ยข), you don't say you have "2 coins of mystery value." You convert both to cents: 50ยข + 25ยข = 75ยข!

Fractions work the exact same way. The denominator (bottom number) tells you the size of the slice. You cannot add a giant half-pizza (1/2) and a smaller third-pizza (1/3) until you slice both pizzas into identical sixths (1/6)!

โŒ THE FATAL "ADD ACROSS" MISTAKE
1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5 (FALSE!)

1/2 is 50%, 1/3 is 33%. Adding them must be 83% (almost a whole pizza!). But 2/5 is only 40% (less than half a pizza!). Adding across breaks reality.

โœ… THE COMMON DENOMINATOR TRUTH
3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6 (CORRECT!)

Slice 1/2 into 3/6, and slice 1/3 into 2/6. Now that the pieces are identical sixths, add 3 + 2 = 5 sixths (83.3% of the pizza)!

๐Ÿ“œ STEP 2: THE 3-STEP FORMULA

The 3-Step Recipe for Any Unlike Fractions

1๏ธโƒฃ Find LCD
Least Common Denominator

List multiples of both denominators and find the smallest number they share (e.g. for 4 and 6, LCD = 12).

2๏ธโƒฃ Scale Both
Equivalent Fractions

Multiply top and bottom by whatever factor makes the bottom equal to the LCD: a/b ร— (k/k).

3๏ธโƒฃ Add & Reduce
Top Numbers Only

Add the numerators, keep the common denominator, and reduce to simplest terms or mixed numbers.

๐Ÿฆ‹ The Butterfly Shortcut Method (Works 100% of the Time)
a/b + c/d = (a ยท d + b ยท c) / (b ยท d)

How it works: Cross-multiply diagonally (a ร— d and b ร— c), add those two numbers for your new top numerator, and multiply the two bottom numbers (b ร— d) for the denominator!

Fraction 2 (Right)

5/6
Common Denominator: 6
Step 1: Check Denominators
๐Ÿ” Denominators: 2 and 3 (UNLIKE)

The denominators are 2 and 3. Because the slices are different sizes (halves vs thirds), we cannot add 1 + 1 directly. We must find a common slice size!

โš ๏ธ EXAM MISTAKE RADAR

3 Mistakes That Cost Students Marks on Fraction Exams

1. Adding Across (The #1 Disaster)

Writing 1/3 + 1/4 = 2/7. Remember: Denominators represent slice size, not countable objects. Always find the common denominator first (4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12).

2. Scaling Bottom But Forgetting Top

When converting 3/4 to twelfths, multiplying 4 ร— 3 = 12 but forgetting to multiply the top: writing 3/12 instead of 9/12. Whatever you do to the bottom, you MUST do to the top!

3. Leaving Improper Fractions Unsimplified

Leaving an answer like 10/8 without reducing to 5/4 and converting to the mixed number 1 1/4. Teachers deduct marks if fractions are not in simplest terms!
