Divide top by bottom. The quotient becomes the whole number, the remainder becomes the new numerator, and the denominator stays the same.

3 Mistakes Students Make When Converting Fractions
The bottom denominator represents the fixed size of each slice and NEVER changes during conversion. If you start with fourths, your answer is in fourths!
For 3 2/5: Always multiply whole by denominator FIRST (3 ร 5 = 15), then add numerator (15 + 2 = 17). Never add first (3 + 2 = 5 ร 5 = 25 โ).
Leaving an answer like 2 5/4 instead of regrouping to 3 1/4. A mixed number must always have a proper fraction part!
