Do you need a common denominator (LCD) to multiply or divide fractions?

NO! This is the #1 most common student misconception. You only need a common denominator when adding or subtracting fractions. When multiplying, you simply multiply straight across (numerator × numerator, denominator × denominator). Finding an LCD when multiplying wastes time and creates huge numbers.

What does "Keep, Change, Flip" (KCF) mean in fraction division?

KCF is the standard mnemonic for dividing fractions: 1. KEEP the first fraction exactly as it is. 2. CHANGE the division sign (÷) to multiplication (×). 3. FLIP the second fraction upside down to its reciprocal (c/d becomes d/c). Then multiply straight across!

Why does dividing by a fraction turn into multiplication by the reciprocal?

Dividing by a fraction asks "how many of these pieces fit into the total?" For example, 4 ÷ (1/2) asks how many half-pizzas fit into 4 whole pizzas. Since every 1 whole pizza contains 2 halves, 4 pizzas contain 4 × 2 = 8 halves. Dividing by 1/2 is physically identical to multiplying by 2/1!

What is cross-canceling and when should you use it?

Cross-canceling is simplifying before you multiply. If any numerator shares a common factor with any denominator (diagonally or vertically), divide both by that factor first. For example, in (2/3) × (3/4), the 3s cancel out and 2/4 reduces to 1/2, giving 1/2 instantly without large multiplication.

How do you multiply or divide a fraction by a whole number?

Write the whole number as a fraction over 1 first! For example, 5 × (2/3) becomes (5/1) × (2/3) = 10/3 = 3 1/3. For division, 5 ÷ (2/3) becomes (5/1) × (3/2) = 15/2 = 7 1/2.

Why Multiplying Makes Slices Smaller, and Division Makes Them Bigger!

✖️ MULTIPLICATION = "Taking a Fraction OF"

When you multiply whole numbers (3 × 4), numbers grow. But multiplying fractions (1/2 × 1/3) means taking half OF a third.

🍰 Imagine 1/3 of a cake. Cut that piece in half: you now hold 1/6 of the entire cake!

➗ DIVISION = "How Many Fit Inside?"

Division asks: "How many measuring scoops of size 1/2 fit into 4?"

🥄 Every 1 whole holds two half-cups. So 4 wholes hold 4 × 2 = 8 scoops! Dividing by 1/2 is identical to multiplying by 2!

The Multiplication & Division Standard Algorithms

1. MULTIPLY STRAIGHT ACROSS

(a/b) × (c/d) = (a · c) / (b · d)

Multiply the top numbers together. Multiply the bottom numbers together. NO common denominator needed!

2. KEEP, CHANGE, FLIP (KCF)

(a/b) ÷ (c/d) = (a/b) × (d/c)

KEEP the first fraction. CHANGE ÷ to ×. FLIP the second fraction upside down (reciprocal)!

⚡ Pro-Tip: Cross-Cancel Before You Multiply

Look at the diagonals before multiplying. If a top number and a bottom number share a common factor (like 4 and 8, or 3 and 9), divide them out first. This saves you from simplifying massive numbers at the end!

3 Mistakes That Cost Students Marks on Multiplication & Division

1. Finding an LCD When Multiplying

You do NOT need common denominators to multiply or divide! Converting denominators wastes precious exam time and creates giant unmanageable numbers. Just multiply straight across!

2. Flipping the WRONG Fraction

Under KCF, always KEEP the first fraction and FLIP the second. If you flip the first fraction (3/2 × 4/5 instead of 2/3 × 5/4), the result will be completely upside down!

3. Forgetting to Change Division to Multiplication

Flipping the second fraction without changing the ÷ sign to × will leave you stuck. Once flipped, multiply straight across!
