The Formula
(Whole × Denominator) + Numerator = New Numerator
Keep the same denominator
Example: Convert 2¾ to Improper

Multiply whole by denominator
2 × 4 = 8How many parts in the whole portion

Add the numerator
8 + 3 = 11Total parts

Keep the denominator
11/4Same denominator as the original fraction
More Examples
2¾11/4(2×4)+3 = 11
3½7/2(3×2)+1 = 7
1⅔5/3(1×3)+2 = 5
5¼21/4(5×4)+1 = 21
💡Quick Check
The improper fraction's numerator should always be larger than its denominator (that's what makes it "improper"!). Also, it should represent the same value - you can verify by converting back.
